egg sac underneath hatchling
Posted: 11/05/2012 by janicepalmer

We have just had an egg hatch and the baby tort has some egg sac the size of a pea underneath. Baby has been bathed. I have smeared lubricating jelly on the whole of the underside of the little one as well on the base of the container so it does not stick to it. It is now back in the incubator.  Is what I have done ok or should I be doing something else. All help gratefully received, Thanks.

The hatchling needs to stay inside the incubator until the egg sac is absorbed it contains all the nutrients that they need. If anymore hatch don't touch them unless it is obvious that they are in trouble.
It is a very exciting  and scary time for you, how many more eggs waiting to hatch have you got?

Hi Jane and thanks for your reply.  I have one more egg to hatch from this clutch of three eggs. I have another clutch from the same female laid one month later of three eggs too. The egg sac has now gone from underneath with great relief this end. Its a little scary to see it hanging from underneath the little one. The two hatchlings weigh 13 and 14 grammes and are so cute. Fingers crossed for the third egg. Thanks again, Janice.

Hi Jane, I keep horsfields. I have six females and one male which are housed in a large greenhouse. I grow food for them above the floor level and they have access to a secure weed area via a ramp from the greenhouse.  I do struggle to grow dandelions though. They love to dig deep in the substrate for days on end sometimes and then I have to go hunting for them when they have their baths. They are so full of character, each and every one of them.  What torts do you keep? Janice.

Hi Janice
I have two female Hermans, One is 25-30yrs old and the other one 6 years old. The little one is a tinker, she is into everything, if there is something to get into mischief with, then she will be first in line. The older one is very gentle and ladylike and just accepts the quiet life.
I have come to the conclusion that weeds are the hardest thing to grow, how ironic is that? I am lucky to have some good picking areas near me, plus the little one would just eat them all in one sitting if I put them in the pen.
How are the eggs coming on?
Jane

Hi Jane, Egg number three hatched late last night. It is a lot paler in colour that the other two but just as precious to us. the earlier two seem to be eating but have not actually seen them yet, we can tell by the leaves that we put into the table. They must be shy.

Have you had your oldest tort since it was a baby. None of mine are that sort of age yet. How priviledged are you.  I have to travel a couple of miles to get decent weeds that are not right next to a busy road and covered in fumes but usually get some.  My youngest, Baby Olive, is starting to stamp her presence with the older ones now and has a lovely personality.  She will no longer be the baby now although it will be a long while before the three hatchlings get into the greenhouse with the others. At least they will have each other.

I have three more eggs from the same female that are not due to hatch for 4ish weeks yet so our fingers are tightly crossed. I bet it goes slowly. lol.

Janice.

Hi everyone I'm new to this. So our African leopard laid 4 eggs on thanksgiving we had one hatch april 16 with large yolk sac attached. He lived a week. Today i came home and another has hatched and he has yolk sac as well. Not as big. So we have look for as much info as possible. We saw to use wet paper towels and line a glass and suspend him . Also to use lubircant or Vaseline and apply to the sac directly and put him back in the incubator and keep him calm warm and dark. Is there anything else we can do to try and save this little guy ???  Still have 2 more eggs in the incubator with no signs of hatching yet .  and is there a way i can send a pic so you can tell me what you think ????? THANKS I really don't want to loose this little one
