How much would a tortoise cost?
Posted: 04/04/2012 by jordan66

Hello, I am wondering how much would a Hermanns/Horsfield?
My price range is probably £50-120.
Would this get me a baby Hermanns/Horsfield?
PS: I'm a first time buyer!

Hi there, yes it will get you a tortoise, but remember the set up as well. You will need a tortoise table or wire-topped rabbit cage, plus a way to warm and give u/v light till he goes outside. I reckon you will need another£80.00+ after paying for a tortoise. Click on "Photo Gallery" on the left, green menu to see what other members use...please do not use a vivarium or aquarium, as they do not give enough ventilation.

Regards, David nr York.

Hi and Welcome
Like David has said there is a lot more items you will need to provide to give your tortoise the correct environment. You will need heating and uv lighting, the combined lamps are better for first time owners, they can cost in the region of £25-£125.00, the lower cost would need replacing more frequently. You have the open top pen, and as David said please don't put them in a viv. There will also be the substrate (Top soil and play sand), hide house and vitamin supplements, and not forgetting Vet fees, which hopefully you will not need very often. I am not trying to put you off, but you sound like a responsible person, and personally I always like to know what is involved before I embark on any pet ownership, especially whether I could afford to own the pet.
Hopefully I have been of some help rather than a party pooper, I was fortunate enough to have someone who helped me to decide when I brought my little one. Just more plea, please do not buy from a Petshop or Garden Centre, the best place to get a good healthy tortoise is from a reputable UK breeder, you not only get a healthy tortoise but the after care and support comes with it too.
Anyway will leave you with the food for thought, and interested to see how you proceed, take a look at the care sheets at the side they will be a great help
Jane
