New Enclosure
Posted: 19/02/2012 by hewill

I am building an enclosure for my 2 tortoises and need some help. My brother-in-law is building a house for them and I need an offcut of roofing felt. Does anyone know if I can buy a small piece. I also need advice on the type of plants I can plant in there for shade that won't be poisonous. Finally, would a normal incadescent bulb be OK inside the hide to give them warmth on cold days or should I use a ceramic lamp?
Sorry about all these questions but thgis is new to me.
Thanks

Hi and Welcome
How old are your torts and what species?
Roofing felt normally comes in a roll, can you ask your DIY shop if they have any off cuts?
For all the information you need on plants have a look at this site, it is the best

For the heating what size house are you trying to heat?

Hi Jane, thanks for coming back to me.
My tortoises are 5 years old and they are Horsefields. I will ask if they have any offcuts or maybe ask aroofing firm, I was hoping I would find something on ebay.
The house overall size will be 1 metre wide by 50cm deep and 80cm high. It will be divided into 2 sections so the area to be heated will be 50cm by 50cm and 80cm high. I was thinking of a ceramic lamp and I have already bought a dimming thermostat by Habistat.

Hi do you have a freecycle group in your area? you might be able to post an add on there for a bit of roofing felt its a group that people give things away or advertise that they want something for nothing www.freecycle.org, worth a try.
