HIBERNATION PROBLEM WET FACE
Posted: 06/01/2012 by donnafj

Hi

This has been the first year that i have used the fridge method and i think i might have a problem with one of my torts (hermanns) i have just checked them all (seven in total) and discovered that one of my females has a wet face ? Ive checked her weight and she was 975g when she went in on 26/11/11 and now she weighs 968g 6/1/12 so her weight is not a issue but the wet face obviously is.

Any advice please.

Thanks

Paul.

Hi

Have you checked the nares and eyes to make sure there is no discharge coming from them?

The other possibility if there is no discharge, could it be condensation?

Sorry. not sure what to suggest, I think the only thing is to keep a close watch to see if it happens again. Can anyone else offer any suggestions?
Keep us posted. In the meantime I will try to see if anyone else has experienced this

Hello there, it does seem odd, but have you checked the following?

Can condensation drip from a surface above your torty? My salad tray drips sometimes.

Is the face near the outer edge so its breath is confined and re-condensing on the face? If so reposition it.

Is the torty in any kind of substrate...soil, paper,? This should prevent local condensation.

Is fridge defrosting normally, or is liquid dripping from anywhere?

If nose, mouth and eyes are not producing the wetness I am at a loss!

I hibernate mine in soil boxes, not in a fridge. They are moist, but not wet, all over. Anyone else got any ideas?

Regards, David nr York.

Some good points there David, other than the condesation, the fridge defrosting is good option!
I did also wonder whether a tort above could have wee'd, but depends on the box?
That was why I was asking where the tort was positioned

Hi Paul,

I think I'm inclined to agree with Jane and David and say it is more than likely condensation from some source or another and is probably nothing to worry about at all.

Kindest Regards

Just a quick update on the wet face of my tort. I wiped her face and have not had anymore problems.
