Hi,
Firstly, don't put the tortoise in a vivarium. A suitable home would be a wooden tortoise table with 50/50 ratio of sand and soil with a UVA and UVB Lamp.
Hope this helps!

:-)
As Ben quite rightly said viv's are not suitable for Hermanns, Spur-Thighes, Horsfields and most other species of tortoises. It isn't just a problem with being warm, tortoises need a range of temperatures which can be achieved by a basking lamp. They also need a UVB source to satisfy their vitamin D3 requirements.

If you look on the left there are photos on the photo gallery that will help with ideas.

May I ask what species of tortoise your are considering getting?

Kindest Regards
Darren
