Lighting advice
Posted: 21/10/2011 by Meghan

Hi, I was looking on Kimbos reptile world for heating and lighting for my new young hermanns tortoise which I am getting for christmas, but we're actually getting it in early December. I was hoping to get a megaray bulb, because it seems simpler, but they havnt got the 100 watt one in stock and they don't do the 120 watt one. Will the 160 watt be ok for a young tortoise?

Another thing, I was hoping to get nutrabol, lime flour and cuttlefish for the tortoise, but I can only find nutrabol in stores, but I managed to find something called a turtle bone in pets at home which it says is a calcium supplement, should I get this? Could you also tell me where to get lime flour from please?

Thank you, Meghan :)

Hi Meghan, good old e bay to the rescue. On ebay search Tortoise under all categories, then click on pet supplies. You will find tortoise tables, supplements, seeds and all manner of things you will need. It will be best if table is set up to check the temperature well in advance of getting torty This will avoid any problems when he first arrives, and I would chat to the breeder for fine detail such as the usual temp and day length he has given his young torts. You have really exciting times ahead, I am impressed by your preparation. You could even start growing food now...go to a supermarket, look around cheese department for those plastic trays they come in (they are thrown away anyway) use these as seed trays and the cost is minimal! Plant at 2 week intervals. Keep us informed, and you must send a picture when you get him!

Regards David nr York.
