Scottish breeders
Posted: 16/10/2011 by Meghan

Hi, I am wanting to get a tortoise as my Christmas present and I have been doing a lot of research about tortoises and how to care for them. The only problems I am having are where to buy a tortoise from, I live in Glasgow in Scotland and there are no recommended Scottish breeders on you website :( i also don't know where to get a tortoise table from as all the pet shops only sell vivariums.

Could you help me on where to buy my tortoise from and where to buy an enclosure for it?

Thanks very much, Meghan

HI Meghan,
Please dont be tempted to buy from the internet or petshops, you may have to travel to get a tortoise from a breeder, you may have relatives who live close to some of our (and other groups) breeders that you may be able to get to.
With regard to a table top enclosure, please see our members enclosures under photo gallery on the lefthand menu. An easy one to start with is a large indoor rabbit cage, which has the advantage of being able to hang lights from the bars, and they are relatively cheap. They can be bought on ebay or petshops. If its a wooden table, you can make one using a large bookcase (lie it on its back) taking out the shelves, these can be bought at ikea or 2nd hand shops or even free on freecycle.

Thank you :) iv actually got two rabbits at the moment and I have there old rabbit cage which is now too small for the rabbits so I could use that :D

Iv now found a breeder in Scotland which one of the members of TPG emailed me :D I'm very exited to hopefully get my little tortoise.

Thank you,
Meghan

Would you please be so good as to drop me a line with the contact details for the breeder please?
I do know of a couple of people who call themselves breeders (but are really not very nice dealers), if it is a genuine breeder in Scotland it would be very helpful

Kindest Regards

Hi Carol, Click and drag me down to the editorto the site.  We have a list of breeders on the website under 'Buying a Tortoise' here is a link http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/70.asp .  As you state you may need to travel to get a UK bred tortoise.  There is just one little point you say you want a 'Horsmann', its either a Horsfield or Hermann!!  I suggest you read our care sheets under the heading The Tortoise' on the lefthand side to see which would be most suitable for you.

Any questions just ask away, regards VivienneClick and drag me down to the editor

Hi,

I am also looking for a reputable breeder in Scotland or even round about the Newcastle area.

After getting some advice from another member of the site, I have been advised to get a Spur-Thighed tortoise (Testudo Graeca Ibera)so if anyone knows any good breeders of this species in the central scotland area/ newcastle area please let me know!

Kind Regards

Hi

I'm looking for a young Hermans or Horsefield tortoise in Scotland or the north of England, does anyone know of any breeders as local to Dumfries&Galloway as possible? I can travel to collect, but ideally only a few hours each way.

Thanks

Sarah
