Bleeding from mouth
Posted: 03/05/2010 by gabrielle

Please help me. My beloved Tommy Tortoise who I found in my garden over 25 years ago is bleeding from his mouth and eyes are closed. Vet here knows nothing about tortosies. Please tell me is he dying?. I love him so much. I have put him in his bed and covered him with his straw and left him in peace. Is he suffering?

I think this tort really needs to see a vet ASAP.

Hi Gabrielle

To put your mind at rest you really need to take your tort to a specialist vet today. There is a list on the left hand side that gives you contact details of vets near your location. You will feel so much better once you know what is wrong, and He/She can start getting the correct treatment. Please keep us all posted, and I hope it isn't too serious

Thank you so much for your kindness. The only vet that would have knowledge of tortoises was not available until 2.30pm to-day. My darling Tommy is now dead and I am grieving.

So sorry to hear the news Gabrielle. Any idea what might have caused it - were there any signs of damage at all?

Sorry Again
Kindest Regards
Darren

Thank you Darren. No, when I brought Tommy in yesterday evening at 6.45pm I noticed that there were red veins under his chin and his eyes were closed. I then lifted him up to examine him and blood started to come out the side of his mouth. I only hope he didn't suffer. It may have been renal failure as I gave a forever home to an abused rescue dog last year and when he was dying blood started to come out of his mouth.I love all animals - its all so horrible. Thank you so much.

Hi Gabrielle, good to hear from you, hope you are feeling better now, I was so sorry to hear about Tommy.  Did your vet say what he died of.

Thank you so much Vivienne for your kind words. I could not get to see a vet who had experience with tortoises until 2.30pm the following day. But my darling Tommy died during the night. So I will never know for sure what he died of as I did not see the vet. As I mentioned, blood coming out of his mouth could mean renal failure. I have no idea what age Tommy was as I found him abandoned 25 years ago in my garden left by the previous owners whom I bought the house from. They had, I understand from neighboours, 5 tortoises and the children used to use them like footballs kicking them around - but Tommy was the only one that survived the cruelty. I miss him as he was a member of our family.
