Energy costs for heating/lighting
Posted: 03/02/2016 by Moggi

Hello everyone, newbie here!!

I'm very interested in rehoming a tort or 2 but my Wife is not convinced as she's concerned that the electric bill will shoot up, I currently don't have any form of enclosure but plan to build something.

Can anyone give me a rough idea what the extra cost could be?

Much obliged

Hello,

I'm afraid it's not possible, there are many variables.

To minimise electricity use, choose a species which hibernates.
All tort's need good quality UVB lighting & warmth in the period after hibernating, to allow them to feed & thrive before going out for the summer.

In periods of poor weather in summer, a greenhouse or poly-tunnel is necessary, so the costs of keeping a tortoise or two [properly], can be substantial.

You'll appreciate that with keeping any animal, it's needs are paramount. So a bit of negotiating may be necessary !

Regards,
Tom
