Hibernation advice
Posted: 11/10/2015 by CMartin

Hello,

I'm looking for some advise re hibernation. I've read through the forum but I'm still unclear as to what to do for the best with my tortoises.

I have 2 Hermann tortoises: 1 is just over a year old and the other was hatched in August this year so still a tiny baby :)

I also have a spur thigh that hatched in 2014 (exact date unknown)

My 1 year old Hermann is 7cm and weighs 60g
My baby Hermann is 5cm and weighs 22g
My spur thigh is 7cm and weighs 62g

Should I be hibernating them this year? Is hibernation essential for them as I am worried about doing it all wrong :-/

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks

Claire

Hello Claire,

Hibe the 1yr olds for 8 weeks, in Jan & Feb & the small one for 4wks in Feb.

Hibernation is both natural & beneficial.

Click  on "The Tortoise" for full hibe info.

Regards,
Tom

Hello Tom,

Thanks for the advice :) I will wait until January then.

They are all quite sleepy at the moment, burying themselves and aren't eating as much is this normal behaviour for this time of year?

They have their own tortoise tables and I have the Mercury Ray bulbs in all which stay on between 8-12 hours per day. I feed them weeds and plants from the garden and have also started weaning them onto the Alpin food which the babies love but the older 2 don't seem to like it- I will persevere though!

Kind regards

Claire

Yes it's normal Claire, their 'body cloc k' is telling them it's about time to hibe.. Also they are aware of the drop in light wavelength.
