Patience with the Rehoming Process
Posted: 14/09/2014 by BenjaminFuzi

Hello everyone.

My name is Benjamin. I'm very new here, and I am very fond of the TPG already. The facilities on this website are fantastic and the registering as a member was swift and easy.

I have also been making use of the forum and have come across some posts that express concern about the timescale of the rehoming process and response time.

Although I am a new member to this group, I hope that by sharing my experiences with the rehoming process of other societies can shed some light on the topic.

The rehoming process can take a long time in any circumstance. People want to make sure that the tortoises are going to go to a loving home that is suitable for their needs. In addition, there is most likely a stack of paperwork and legal matters involved. If this is all added to the busy life of a volunteer, it is understandable that the process may take a fair while.

The best assets that one has when rehoming a tortoise are patience and understanding .i.e. having the patience to see the process through from beginning to end while understanding that the length of time is in the best interest for the tortoise itself.

As I said, I am simply a new member, but if anyone has any questions for me at all or if there is any way I can help anyone (or their tortoises, of course), please feel free to respond and get in contact with me.

Sadly I sent mine in over a year ago, I applied to adopt a little girl called milly from New Malden,  I didn't hear anything at all, then I saw her being advertised again so I applied again and still no answer, after around another three months I saw her yet again, and this time she was rehomed to someone else, I never heard from anyone even to this day,  I dont understand why they get you to fill out an extensive application with photos and you never get to rehome?

Please understand, it is not an easy process. Susan receives dozens of e-mails every day. Coping with these is easily achievable, if it wasn't for other constraints...family, work etc.
If a suitable home is offered and all the boxes are ticked, these are dealt with first.
Unfortunately, most do not meet the criteria; this can be ours or the current keepers.
Most applications consist of a photo of a garden, a wooden box and a very little else.
In addition to dealing with all the applications and the tortoises that come in for rehoming, Susan often works with people (who are willing and committed) to improved the set-ups so they meet the criteria
The fact that an application is completed doesn't mean you will automatically get to rehome a tortoise. Great care is taken finding the very best homes.

HTH
Just to clarify - I'm not commenting specifically on anyone's rehoming applications - just commenting in general.
