URGENT HELP REQUIRED
Posted: 23/03/2013 by wilsonathome

URGENT!!!!!! Please read all of this post and reply to rehoming@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk quoting London - George
I have an urgent request for assistance with the care and reforming of George.

George has recently sustained a nasty bite to the face and jaw from another male tortoise and he has received surgery to correct the broken jaw and flesh damage. George is currently feeding via a feeding tube which is inserted via his neck and he has a pin inserted into his jaw whilst it mends. The tube feeding is expected to last for few months until his jaw is strong enough for solid foods alone. The veterinary work was carried out by Brandon Spolandor at Barrier Animal Clinic in south east London.
No further medical procedures are now expected although the tube and pin will need to be removed at some point in the near future.

The problem is 2 fold. Now that George is home from the vet, his current owner is struggling to provide him with the 3 times daily feeds via his feeding tube during the week due to a lack of time.
The longer term problem which is equally as important to resolve is that George needs to be separated from the other tortoise and we need to find him a life long carer. The current owner simply does not have the space or equipment to adequately care for them both separately and is very keen to avoid any more injuries.

George's owner is desperate to find someone who can provide George with immediate care with a view to keeping him permanently. He has already settled all of the vet bills however if any more charges were to be incurred for instance when the tube and pin need to be removed he would be prepared to settle any costs in advance on the advice of the vet.

Statistics
Male Horsefield Tortoise. 7yrs old. Carapace 13cm. Weight 530g. I have personally cared for George for the previous 5 years.

Characteristics
George is a typical curious energetic male Horsefield tort. George has a very good appetite and continues to put on weight even immediately after hibernation and during this medical procedure. George will climb, dig and march around his territory in between basking and eating.

Previous care and husbandry
George has primarily been a house tortoise with a large tortoise table that he is able to access and leave via a door so that he can explore the whole house when allowed. George has a mercury vapour heat and light lamp when in doors. George has access to an outdoor terrace area and when it is particularly warm he also sleeps outside in a tortoise house. , but due to the British weather this doesn't last very long. George is a very hardy tortoise and even on the coldest summer day he still wakes up and slowly parades around his territory.

George has never been fed processed foods and only eats fresh varied leafs, sometimes flowers and very rarely the odd piece of vegetable such as broccoli. George enjoys gnawing on cuttlefish bone and i regularly sprinkle Nutrobal on his food. George has regular warm baths but to be honest he doesn't appear to particularly enjoy this.
