hi , ive just bought a ceramic heat emitter 'bulb' with a screw in end, now ive tried it in a normal screw lamp that it fits but it doesnt work, do they have to be used in conjunction with a specific heat lamp or is my 'bulb' just a dud one, any advice greatly recieved with thanks xxx

I think I'm right in saying that you must use the ceramic heat emitters in a ceramic fitting. They get very hot an will burn out an ordinary lamp fitting. That could be your problem. Was there anything on the box it came in that said it should be used with a ceramic fitting?

yes nina, its an exo terra heat emitter lamp, ive actually got a ceramic lamp holder on its way to me thru the post but i needed to know if the lamp worked so we tried it in an ordinary lamp but it didint heat up at all so im guessing either the terminals are not right or the 'bulb'is faulty, will wait till the lamp holder arrives and try again, thanks hun xxxx

The thing about ceramic heat emitters, is if you can get it working it will last forever! For some reason they just don't die. I've got one in my corn snake's cage that has been there for just under 21 years, and is still going strong. So I hope you can get it to work OK. Is it for an outdoor house?

Hi.  I really like the ceramic bulbs, and use them in the greenhouse overnight when the temps go down a bit. They give out a nice gentle, and quite localised heat, so that you are warming the area where the tortoise is, rather than the whole greenhouse, which helps with the fuel bill a bit!

I think they should only be used with a ceramic fitting, but they do seem to need to be screwed in quite firmly.  So if it doesnt seem to be working, try screwing it in a bit further.
