Tortoise weeing in hibernation. WHAT TO DO?
Posted: 30/10/2011 by sharong

I keep reading about how important it is to get up a tortoise that has urinated during hibernation.  What I can't find is clear instructions about what exactly to do!  Should I bathe him to rehydrate him and then put him away to let him wind down and go back to sleep?...... Please help!  I only have a short window of opportunity as I discovered this yesterday afternoon (29th) and am due to go away the day after tomorrow.   Click and drag me down to the editor

If they wee in hibernation, they need getting up. To be honest I've never had it happen.

He has always put himself into hibernation by burying himself in the garden.  He did this quite early in Sept just before we had quite a hot spell.  However, he stayed asleep and I dug him up and put him in a box in the shed.  10 days ago I checked him and he was awake and had wee-ed. I have had him for the past 16 years (he is now over 70) and he has always sorted himself out satisfactorily and been overwintered in a double walled box in an insulated shed.
