  • Pet Shops
  • Garden Centres

Many of the above dealers promote "captive bred" tortoises, what they don't tell you is that they are usually bred on deplorable tortoise farms abroad and are imported into the UK for the pet trade. Unfortunately, many are also often offer wild-caught which can have a devastating affect on wild populations.
The UK Captive Bred Tortoises listed For Sale are not sold by the Tortoise Protection Group, but are bred by a carefully selected list of UK Breeders/enthusiasts. We hope you will choose to obtain your tortoise from a caring UK Breeder rather than a dealer. Our list of genuine breeders cover a wide area; and include Tortoises For Sale from Kent to Dorset to Scotland. You should ensure the appropriate Article 10 certificate is in place when purchasing Annexe A listed tortoises.

If you are looking for your first Tortoise, the TPG recommend either

ALL OF THESE SHOULD BE ACCOMPANIED BY A VALID ARTICLE 10 CERTIFICATE AT THE POINT OF SALE

All of these are listed on Annex A of EC Regulation 338/97 and require a valid certificate under Article 10 of that Regulation for any commercial use or transaction, which includes purchase, offering for sale, advertising for sale, actual sale, barter or exchange.

It is an offence under Regulation 8(1) of the Control of Trade in Endangered Species (Enforcement) Regulations 1997 to sell or use for any commercial purpose an Annex A species without the relevant valid Article 10 certificate. The legislation is formatted in such a way as to make the commercial transaction of a sale without a valid certificate specifically a two ended offence. In other words, both vendor and purchaser commit an offence

These are the original "garden tortoises", though we now have much more information on how to care for these properly in order to provide as good a quality of life as possible in our care. For information please see our species specific care sheets under our header section "The Tortoise".
Another popular choice is the Horsfield, though great care should be taken when keeping these tortoises as they do tend to not only dig, but are very competent at tunneling.

We also have a forum on Facebook, frequented by a wide range of keepers. Please feel free to join by clicking HERE if you require any advice.

The Tortoise Protection Group reserves the right to refuse any advert submitted or any application to be added to the TPG Breeders list.
