Tortoise shell damaged
Posted: 12/07/2023 by HP

Hello, please can you help me? My 7 year old Hermann tortoise was attacked by the family dog this evening. A layer of the scutes on the carpace has been removed and a grey layer is visible on 80%. The shell hasn't been pierced and everything else appears unharmed. I've bathed him with warm water, put him in his enclosure and covered the enclosure with a sheet to make him feel warm and safe. I intend to take him to the vets tomorrow. (Thanks for the list of specialist vets on your website).

Has this happened to anybody else? How long will it take for the shell to recover? What will the healing process involve? Thank you
